How cat years become human years

Cats grow up fast. By its first birthday a cat is roughly as mature as a 15-year-old person, and by two it matches a 24-year-old. After that the pace settles down to about four human years for every cat year. This is the table used by the American Association of Feline Practitioners and most veterinary clinics, and it is exactly what this calculator applies. Months are counted too, so a 6-month-old kitten comes out at about 7.5 human years.

A quick reference

A 3-year-old cat is about 28 in human years, a 5-year-old about 36, a 10-year-old about 56, a 15-year-old about 76 and a 20-year-old about 96. Because the formula is linear after the second birthday, you can also work it out yourself: take 24 and add four times the number of years beyond two.

Life stages and care

The tool also shows the life stage: kitten under one year, adult until about 7, mature from 7, and senior from 10. Older cats are prone to kidney disease, thyroid problems, dental disease and arthritis, so regular check-ups, a good diet, fresh water and easy access to litter boxes and resting spots all help them stay comfortable.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert cat years to human years?
The first year of a cat's life equals about 15 human years, the second year adds 9 more (24 at age 2), and each year after that adds about 4. A 10-year-old cat is therefore roughly 56 in human years.
Is one cat year really seven human years?
No. Cats reach adulthood within the first two years, so the early years count for far more than seven. The 1 : 7 rule is a myth for cats just as it is for dogs.
When is a cat considered a senior?
Most veterinary guidelines call cats mature from about 7 years, senior from 10 and geriatric from around 15. Twice-yearly check-ups are often recommended from the senior stage.
How old do indoor cats live?
Indoor cats commonly live 12 to 18 years and some reach 20 or more, which corresponds to about 64 to 88 human years, or 96+ for cats that reach 20.
Is this a veterinary tool?
No. The conversion is an estimate based on common age tables. Your vet is the best source of advice for your cat's health.
