The word percent means "per hundred", so a percentage is already a fraction with a denominator of 100. To convert, write the number over 100 and simplify by dividing top and bottom by their greatest common divisor: 60% = 60/100 = 3/5. If the percentage has a decimal part, such as 12.5%, first scale both numbers by a power of ten to remove the point (125/1000) and then simplify, giving 1/8. This converter uses exact integer arithmetic, so even percentages with many decimals are converted without rounding errors.
Percentages above 100 become improper fractions or mixed numbers (250% = 5/2 = 2 1/2), and negative percentages keep their sign. Alongside the fraction you get the decimal equivalent, which is simply the percentage divided by 100.
Common percent and fraction equivalents
Memorising a few conversions saves time: 50% = 1/2, 25% = 1/4, 75% = 3/4, 20% = 1/5, 10% = 1/10, 12.5% = 1/8, and 5% = 1/20. Repeating percentages such as 33.33% or 66.67% are rounded versions of 1/3 and 2/3. To get these neat answers, choose a denominator limit: with a limit of 100, 33.33% returns 1/3 instead of 3333/10000, and the tool labels the result as an approximation.
Fractions are often easier than percentages for mental arithmetic: finding 12.5% of a number is the same as dividing it by 8. To convert in the other direction, use the fraction to decimal converter and multiply by 100, or the decimal to fraction converter. Everything is calculated locally in your browser.
